Notable Personalities

Shah Kalander

Inspired by the spiritual power and the noble ideals of Islam upheld by the saintly Pir and Kamel Shah Kalander (R.A.), many people of this region embraced Islam. The exact dates of his birth and death are unknown. He is recognized as one of the prominent early Islamic preachers in Northern Bengal. The shrine (mazar) of Hazrat Shah Kalander (R.A.) is located in the Domar Upazila of Nilphamari district.

Nawab Nurul Uddin

Nawab Nurul Uddin was a great leader of the peasant rebellion. He led a widespread movement against the brutal rule of the British colonial merchants and their local collaborators, including Debi Singh and other zamindars. Under his leadership, the peasant uprising that began in the Kazir Hat Pargana gradually spread across the entire Indian subcontinent.

Khayrat Hossain

Khayrat Hossain was born on November 14, 1909, in Berakuthi village of Sonaray Union, Nilphamari district. In 1930, he was elected as the first Muslim Vice President (VP) of Rangpur Carmichael College. In 1944, he was elected as an MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) from the Nilphamari region. Later, in 1955, he served as the Minister of Food, Fisheries, and Livestock in the United Front Cabinet for two and a half years. In 1971, he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 1972. Several places in Nilphamari — such as the Khayrat Hossain Market, Khayrat Hossain Road, and Khayrat Nagar Railway Station — bear his name in memory.

Dabir Uddin Ahmed

Dabir Uddin Ahmed was born in Bhogdaburi, Nilphamari, in the Bengali year 1309 (approximately 1902/1903 AD). He was imprisoned in 1952 for participating in the Language Movement and was later elected as a Member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly in 1954. He served for a long time as the President of the Nilphamari District Bar Association.

Dr. Zikrul Haque

Dr. Zikrul Haque played a leading role in Syedpur’s political scene during the 1960s. During that period, he was elected as a member of the Pakistan National Assembly as an independent candidate, later joining the Awami League. He was also one of the founding members of the Syedpur Municipality. In 1971, during the Liberation War, he was captured by the Pakistan Army and brutally killed. Various institutions in Syedpur have been established in his memory.

Begum Lutfunnessa Abbas

Begum Lutfunnessa Abbas was born in Domar, Nilphamari, in 1912. She was the wife of the late Abbas Uddin, the legendary maestro of Bhawaiya folk music. She also made a significant contribution to literature. Among her published works are: Kichu Phool Kichu Smriti ("Some Flowers, Some Memories"), Shomoy Kotha Bole ("Time Speaks"), and Shesh Bikel-er Rod ("The Late Afternoon Sun").

Harlal Roy

Harlal Roy was born in 1932 in Subornakhuli village of Nilphamari. Apart from performing music on radio and television, he also acted in Bengali films. His contributions to Bhawaiya music are particularly noteworthy.

Mahesh Chandra Roy

Mahesh Chandra Roy was born on January 1, 1918, in Putimari Union, Kishoreganj Upazila, Nilphamari. He was well known as a lyricist, composer, and singer. It is said that he composed about 3,740 songs during his lifetime, many of which reflect the spirit and life of the people and land of Nilphamari. He passed away on January 29, 1993.

Rathindranath Roy

Rathindranath Roy is a renowned folk singer, especially known for his mastery in Bhawaiya songs. He performed these traditional songs on radio, television, stage, and in films, helping to elevate the genre to national prominence. His father, Harlal Roy, was also a celebrated Bhawaiya lyricist, composer, and an esteemed educator.
